Rafiqi is a musical trio that came into being in 2001 under the name Myndz. Brothers, Jothee Kiiru and Ezeek Kariuki who had originally formed a rap group Blunted Souljahz, got together with Makhosa Man also known as Richard ‘Boli’ Mootseng who was an established Namibian Musician/Producer and Poet in his own right.

‘Boli’ as Makhosa Man is popularly known came into the Namibian musical scene in 1998 when the song ‘Sunday afternoon’ off his debut CD ‘out on Bail’ hit the airwaves and became a household phenomenon. Boli who already was a radio and TV personality created a buzz when ‘Sunday afternoon’ got a lot of airplay on radio and TV music programs in the relatively newly independent African country at that time.

The brothers who originated from Kenya, founded the group blunted souljahz in Zimbabwe where they were living around the same time. They travelled throughout east and southern Africa and finally landed in Namibia in 1999 when they recorded their first EP present day.

‘I’ll take you there’ which was a song that had previously been recorded in Nairobi and then redone in Namibia became a national hit on Namibian TV and radio. It also created a buzz in East Africa and became a theme song for one of East Africa TV's (then known as ‘Channel Five’ – based in Dar es Salaam) Afro beat programme - ngoma. Their nomadic living in Tanzania, Zimbabwe and finally Namibia in what they call the ‘exile years’ gave them a unique blend of phrases and chants that incorporated the different urban and traditional sounds, slang and phrases they frequently intertwine into their music. In 2000, Souljahz met with Boli when he directed and shot the video for their hit song I’ll take you there. They continued to meet in Windhoek musical circles and in 2001 came together and in their first studio session together, recorded Shiloshe, feel me Kulcha, Killuminati and a few other tracks many of which would later be nominated for best African group for the prestigious Kora© Awards of 2002. Their Debut Album a Lil Beat o Kulcha an inter-play of the phrase ‘a little bit of culture’ was a compilation of these tracks and other recordings which culminated with the EP cassette release of 18 tracks on cassette. Myndz changed their name in 2004 to Rafiqi (which means friends in Swahili) and released their first CD under the title a little bit of Kulcha. The 12 track album was distributed by Paul Joubert Music. Rafiqi continued to record music both as a group and individually with different producers such as Ogopa Djs from East Africa, Big Ben (Namibian), Burrton Reid, and Christian Polloni they have also been featured in a number of other artists’ music. Since then, they have worked on a new album due to be released this year produced by Rafiqi and renowned Music Producer Christian Polloni who has worked with well known musicians such as Alpha Blondy and Papa Wemba. According to Rafiqi, the album has been over 3 years in the making and is their most comprehensive work to date. The eagerly awaited album named Kalimpantu and is due to be released later this year (2009)
